Apple Airpods - Review After 3 Days

Earbuds have been popular for several years now but frankly speaking I didn’t own any pair until three days back. The reason is I didn’t need one. Even the wired Portronics earphones I had for few years, I barely used them, and they probably got misplaced or lost somewhere while we shifted to a new place a couple of weeks ago.

Why Now & Why Apple Airpods

Not so long ago, I got into the habit of listening to podcasts and audiobooks. It is honestly not my thing to sit idle and focus on listening alone while keeping my other senses restful. I would rather do some other work or chores at home and listen to stuff in parallel.

I definitely had other options like In-Ear Monitors or low-budget other brands. I’m not an audiophile, but who doesn’t appreciate good quality sound? So, to test out, I got a used pair of Apple Airpods (2nd gen) from a friend with a commitment that I will buy them if I find them worth it.

After testing them for three days, I have decided to keep them. The new pair costs between 10-11K INR, and I’m being offered this used pair for under 4.5K INR, which I think is a sound deal.

Design and Build Quality

The AirPods come in a small charging case that is easy to carry around. The case is made of high-quality plastic and has a visible wear & tear on the surface besides micro scratches. The earbuds themselves are made of the same material and have a sleek design with no scratches. They fit comfortably in ears and do not fall out easily.

Sound Quality

The sound quality of the AirPods is impressive. The earbuds deliver clear and crisp sound with good bass. I tested the AirPods while listening to podcasts, watching videos, and making phone calls, and the sound quality was excellent in all scenarios.

Connectivity

Connecting the AirPods to an iPad, or Mac is effortless. Once you open the case, the AirPods automatically connect to your device. The connection is stable, and I did not experience any dropouts during testing. They auto-connect to the idevice in its proximity having an active sound playing seamlessly making it really convenient feature for its ecosystem.

Battery Life

The battery life of the AirPods is impressive. Usually the new pair can last up to five hours on a single charge, but in my case they lasted nearly 4.5 hours of listening, and the charging case provides an additional 24 hours of battery life.

Sensors & Control

It features following sensors:

Controls: Double-tap to play, skip forward, or answer a phone call and “Hey Siri” to do things like play a song, make a call, or get directions. However, as someone who is uncomfortable with personal voice assistants, I have never used Siri on any of my Apple devices.

Conclusion

I am also okay with purchasing a used pair as they deliver the same sound quality as a new pair would. Given my usage and willingness to invest in wireless earbuds, 5K INR is the maximum I can spend on them.

The design and build quality are top-notch, and the battery life is impressive. The AirPods are not cheap, but they are worth the investment if you are an Apple user who values convenience and quality.
